Categories, not verdicts. Nothing here has been bought, opened or assembled by us — each entry links to a search so you can read the current listing and the stated age grading yourself.
Every basket on this site is built to an age band. The manufacturer states the age grading; the small-parts rule at 16 CFR Part 1501 explains why it exists; the call is the parent's.

The container that survives an outdoor hunt and becomes a beach pail in July. Bought as a pair in two colors, it also settles the which-one-is-mine argument for years.

The layer people underestimate. A plain one with nothing printed on the front comes back every spring; buy for the size you intend to fill, not the size that photographs well.

The direct swap for plastic grass: it lifts the contents the same way and goes in the recycling on Monday. One color reads cleaner in a basket than the multicolor mix.

The strongest non-candy anchor for a spring basket, because it lands in the season it arrives in. Check the stated age grading and whether seeds are included or bought separately.

Coiled loosely it takes three times the space it does flat, which is exactly what a basket needs in the middle. Bought in March, it gets used through the summer.

Flat, cheap, and the one basket item that is still visible in July. An early Easter means the ground is cold, so pair them with a pot and a windowsill rather than a garden bed.

A workable middle-band anchor, because a basket bought in March is bought two months ahead of the weather it belongs to. Check the stated age grading on the packaging.

Cheap, consumable, and used the same afternoon it is opened, which is more than most basket filler manages. Read the age grading before buying for the youngest band.

The six-to-nine band's best small buy, because it is an activity rather than an object and it survives being carried to a friend's house.

Small, flat, and used at a desk for months. The kind of thing a ten-to-twelve-year-old will actually pick up, which is more than most novelty filler manages.

A consumable that is not food, which is exactly what a no-candy basket runs short of. The washable formulation is the version parents actually want in a kitchen.

The infant and toddler answer that survives being chewed, dropped and read four hundred times. One good book beats a basket of small plastic items for that band.

The strongest non-candy line there is. Flat, inexpensive, scales from the youngest reader to a teenager, and nobody in the house objects to a book arriving.

A title in a series they already read beats a standalone every time, because the next one is already the reward. Cheap, flat, and it fills the basket honestly.

One bag split across two or three baskets costs less than a novelty item each and looks like more. A wrapper tipped loose into a basket is not the one that carried the allergen statement.

The cheapest thing in the basket and the one most likely to still be in a drawer next year. Write it before you assemble, because afterwards you will skip it.

The least glamorous keeper on the list and the one most likely to still be in daily use in September. Nothing about it says Easter, which is exactly the point.

Wicker has gaps and small things fall through them. A liner raises the floor a couple of inches, stops the load sliding sideways, and counts as an item once the basket is emptied.

Worth it on a basket that travels or waits overnight, and the first line to cut on one carried from a closet to the kitchen table. Buy the size up; the gather at the top eats more than you think.

A made basket travels as a parcel, not as a basket. Allow an inch of clearance on every side and fill it, and leave out anything fresh or meltable before the box is taped.

One of the few small things that works for the youngest band, because the packaging states an age grade and a wet toy is used the same week. Check for the small-parts warning before it goes in.

The most reliable filler in the three-to-five band: cheap, flat, endlessly divisible between two baskets, and gone within a week rather than living in a drawer.

Consumable, used outdoors the afternoon the basket is opened, and small enough to fill a gap without adding a real line to the budget. Buy the refill bottle at the same time.

A teen-basket staple that is small, inexpensive and not embarrassing to receive. Splits neatly across two baskets when a set arrives with several tubes.

The least sentimental item on any list here and the one most likely to be used daily. A spare cable is the teenage equivalent of socks, and it is received about as warmly.

For the adult basket, where the brief is small, consumable and specific. Check the allergen statement on the label if the basket is going to somebody else's house.

Bought two months before you would otherwise buy them, which is the whole trick of a spring basket: it looks like a treat in April and gets used all summer.

A keeper rather than a consumable, and one that survives being handed down. Check the stated age grade, because a puzzle for a four-year-old and one for a toddler are not the same object.
